What is Levocarnitine Used For? Levocarnitine, also known as L-carnitine, is a naturally occurring product used to treat a genetic energy metabolism disorder (secondary carnitine deficiency). Levocarnitine is used by the body to carry certain chemicals (long chain fatty acids) into the cells of the body for energy metabolism. The IV form of Levocarnitine is recommended if you have serious kidney disease (e.g., ESRD/dialysis) because high doses of the oral form of this product may result in serious side effects (e.g., seizures, fishy odor ) or interfere with kidney dialysis (increased nitrogen waste). Consult your doctor or pharmacist.

How To Use Levocarnitine
Give Levocarnitine by vein (IV) over 2 to 3 minutes usually every 3 to 4 hours; or over a longer time (by infusion) in an appropriate solution (normal saline or Lactated Ringers) as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your weight, medical condition, and response to therapy. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Levocarnitine Side Effects
Nausea and vomiting may occur. If either of these effects persists or worsens, notify your doctor promptly. Promptly tell your doctor if any of these side effects occur: unusual body odor, severe nausea, stomach pain. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: seizures. If you notice any other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Levocarnitine Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: any allergies. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using Levocarnitine. It is not known if Levocarnitine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Levocarnitine Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Levocarnitine Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: diarrhea.

Missed Levocarnitine Dose
If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Levocarnitine Storage
Store the vials at room temperature 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. After dilution with IV fluids, this product is stable at room temperature for 24 hours. Discard any unused portion of the vials.
