New Year Medicare Plan To Confuse Many

12/29/2005: The new Medicare drug plan kicks-in on New Years day, 2006 and doctors are expecting a deluge of questions from confused senior citizens. Patients who are also on Medicaid (dual-eligible recipients), will be automatically enrolled in a drug plan as of January 1st if they do not choose one themselves.

Pain drugs Cut Mouth Cancer Risk

10/7/2005: New resarch shows NSAID medications (COX enzyme blockers) like asprin may play a role in reducing oral cancer. The research indicates that COX enzymes, commonly associated with pain, may be directly linked with certain types of oral cancers.

New Once-Daily Version of Tramadol Approved in EU

9/6/2005: Labopharm Inc received regulatory approval for a new version of Tramadol in 22 European Countries on 9/6/2005. The new Once-Daily Tramadol has been approved in daily doses ranging from 100-400mg. Labopharm expects to submit their once-daily Tramadol to the United States Food and Drug Administration this year which may be approved as early as 9/2006 if there are no snags.

Can Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Drugs Save Lives?

08/20/2005: According to a new study, Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors such as Sildenafil Citrate better known as Viagra, Vardenafil (Levitra) and Tadalafil (Cialis) have been found to have potential future applications beyond Erectile Dysfunction such as pulmonary hypertension, various cardiovascular diseases and preeclampsia.

Could Viagra Raise STD Risks in Gay Men?

06/01/2005: Researchers have begun asking the federal government to impose new restrictions on Viagra due to recent findings that gay men are more likely to engage in unprotected sex and are thus more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases while taking the drug. The findings of these studies published in the June 2005 issue of the American Journal of Medicine surveyed gay and bisexual males, mostly from the San Francisco area. The study authors would like the government to consider making Viagra a controlled substance which would eliminate the free samples and make it harder for traffickers to sell.
