snow returns to the mountains beginning this evening...
.a strong pacific storm system moving from the northwest will dive into the central rockies tonight and friday. an associated cold front will sweep over northeast utah and northwest colorado this evening...and then south of interstate 70 by friday morning. snow levels will lower to 6000 feet friday morning for light snow accumulations across the northern and central valleys. a cold unstable north flow will continue to produce snowfall in the colorado mountains through friday night...favoring the mountains along the continental divide.

* snow accumulation...6 to 18 inches with the highest amounts from rabbit ears pass southward. lesser amounts on mount werner.
* winds...gusty northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph this evening will shift to northeast on friday.
* impacts...roadways will become icy and snowpacked tonight. gusty winds may produce local areas of blowing and drifting snow over high exposed terrain.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
a winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow are expected or occurring. strong winds and blowing snow are also possible. this will make travel very hazardous or impossible.
