Flood Warning - East Polk (Minnesota) |
the flood warning remains in effect until noon cdt monday for western polk...western marshall...clay...kittson and norman counties in northwest minnesota...and wilkin county in west central minnesota...and eastern walsh...pembina and grand forks counties in northeast north dakota...and cass...barnes...traill...steele... griggs...sargent...richland and ransom counties in southeast north dakota...
local officials continue to report water over topping roadways in low lying areas resulting from snowmelt and ice jams. in cass county...emergency management has relayed information regarding numerous flooded roads as the swollen sheyenne has broken out in many places creating overland flooding....notably just south of harwood where water is up to a foot deep over the southbound lanes of interstate 29 reducing traffic to one lane. similar flooding is still prevalent along ditches...streams and tributaries...especially farther north...where numerous roads have been closed. the route 17 bridge east of grafton spanning the red river is closed...as is nd 54 between i-29 and oslo minnesota. nd 200 at mile marker 402 near hillsboro is closed due to flooding. numerous county and township roads and bridges have water running over them or are completely washed out. persons should be aware of water over other roads across all of these counties...with the probability of additional road flooding as overland water continues to flow toward the mainstem red.
precautionary/preparedness actions...
turn around dont drown. avoid driving on flooded roads. most flood related deaths occur in automobiles.
do not underestimate the power of flood waters. only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.
do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. the water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
