.now... light snow showers and flurries will spread northeast across rabun county in northeast georgia and the southern and central mountains of north carolina into the early afternoon. snowfall amounts through 100 pm will be light...with a trace expected across the valley floors...and a few tenths of an inch accumulation likely above 3500 feet in elevation.

snow showers to develop across the southern appalachians this afternoon into tonight...
.a strong upper level low pressure system will move across the southern appalachians this afternoon through this evening. very cold air under this system will combine with fairly abundant moisture to produce snow showers...especially at the higher elevations. heavy snowfall will be possible above 4000 feet...while mainly light snow showers...possibly mixed with rain...with impact the lower mountain valleys. a few thunderstorms could develop to locally enhance snowfall rates as well.

a winter weather advisory above 3500 feet remains in effect until midnight edt tonight.
showers will develop from the southwest across the french broad valley through the afternoon hours. mainly rain is expected at elevations below 2500 feet...with some snow mixing in at times. little or no snow accumulation is expected in the valley from marshall to asheville to brevard. snow accumulations in the surrounding higher terrain will be highly dependent on elevation. elevations between 2500 and 3500 feet could see a dusting of snow. elevations above 3500 feet should see accumulations of 1 to 2 inches by this evening...and the highest ridge tops could see 4 inch totals or higher.
the snow showers will taper back toward the tennessee border overnight. the advisory for higher elevations in madison county could need to be extended at some point.

a winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities...and use caution while driving.
