Hydrologic Outlook - Pierce (North Dakota) |
runoff from rain and snowmelt was beginning...
as of thursday morning...river gauges across western and central north dakota were trending upwards after recent rain and snow contributed to an already wet countryside. reports were coming in from many watersheds of standing water starting to slowly move towards small streams and rivers. these reports include apple creek near menoken...beaver creek near linton...the james and knife rivers and pipestem creek areas. forecast temperatures for the next several days are also trending upwards and will provide favorable conditions for a slow to moderate melt rate from the remaining snowpack. however...areas east of the missouri river have had rain in excess of one inch. this suggests that little additional melt is needed to create overland flooding once the water establishes pathways through the snow that is currently holding it back.
for the next several days...the primary concern will be overland flooding attributed to plugged culverts and surface drainages which back up enough water to top local roadways.
snowmelt models suggest that more active runoff will begin in earnest next week and will create open water conditions across much of southern north dakota.
the national weather service office in bismarck will update this hydrologic outlook daily until conditions warrant that it be allowed to expire...or that it be upgraded to a flood watch or advisory.
