Short Term Forecast - Noble (Oklahoma) |
rain and embedded thunderstorms were located along a strong cold front in southern and eastern oklahoma...from ardmore to ada to holdenville. rainfall averaging one quarter inch...and occasional cloud to ground lightning...will move east...reaching atoka and durant before midnight.
behind the cold front...brisk north winds averaged 25 to 30 mph...with frequent gusts around 40 to 45 mph. this will continue throughout the night...making travel difficult for high profile vehicles...especially on east to west oriented roads such as interstate 40. meanwhile...temperatures were falling rapidly...down into the 40s from vernon to oklahoma city and stillwater...and down to the lower 30s in northwest oklahoma. the freezing line had reached cheyenne...fairview...and cherokee. the area northwest of that line will experience a brief period of freezing drizzle...which could create slick and hazardous travel...especially on bridges. precipitation will change over to snow...as a strong upper level trough approaches from the west. the change to moderate snow is expected in northwest oklahoma by 1 am. as the trough approaches...widespread showers of cold rain will develop from texas up through central and north central oklahoma. the rain will gradually change to snow as the upper level trough draws closer. snow is expected to reach blackwell...el reno...and altus by 4 am.

Winter Storm Warning - Noble (Oklahoma) |
heavy snow and wind will develop rapidly over much of oklahoma...
a late season arctic air mass will cause temperatures to fall abruptly tonight...while an upper level trough begins to intensify to our west. the trough will form a strong upper level low on saturday...as it tracks eastward along the red river.
the result will be a sudden...and strong...winter storm to affect much of oklahoma...especially north of the upper low. the main impacts will be heavy falling snow and blowing snow that will reduce visibility. accumulations will average 4 to 8 inches over a large part of oklahoma...while local amounts close to 12 inches are possible in areas north of oklahoma city...toward watonga... enid...ponca city...and stillwater. meanwhile...north to northwest winds will be very strong throughout the southern plains...with speeds averaging near 30 mph...and gusts around 45 mph. the snow will be somewhat wet...with temperatures just a few degrees below freezing at the ground...but near blizzard conditions are likely in the areas that receive the most snow. light to moderate snow will continue into sunday...especially from central oklahoma eastward. travel will become very difficult or impossible in many areas this weekend. this is a potentially life threatening winter storm. preparations for severe winter weather should be completed tonight.
