...enhanced fire weather threat today...
the combination of very dry conditions and gusty westerly winds will increase the threat for rapid...or erratic fire growth...for escaped woodland or brush fires today. west to northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph may gust up to 25 mph in the afternoon. the relative humidity will drop to 25 percent...or lower...especially just east of the blue ridge...where winds moving down slope of the higher mountain ridges will have an added drying effect. this combined with temperatures warming into the lower 80s...will lead to a higher than normal fire weather threat...from the virginia and north carolina foothills...eastward into the piedmont this afternoon.
outdoor burning is discouraged today...and any burning that must take place...should be conducted with extreme caution. please take steps to prevent unintended or uncontrolled fires. smoking materials should be properly extinguished. camp fires should be kept within a closed camp fire ring and promptly extinguished when not attended.
